This collection of 3 scarves visually explores the different factors that threaten endangered species. Simultaneously, it celebrates the beauty and diversity of wildlife through narrative illustration on printed textiles.
‘Inky Oceans’ features a wide range of our underwater counterparts as the movement of the endangered crustaceans and fish fluidly form against oil spill inspired backgrounds. The marbling effect on the background draws a reference to the catastrophic effects that oil spills have on marine life.
The ‘Insect World’ scarf encapsulates a miniscule world we do not usually see the details of allowing the viewer to fully appreciate the intricates of the natural world. Simultaneously, it is an informational piece, where the sizes of the insects, indicate how endangered they are. The smaller the size of the insect, the closer it is to extinction. The floral pattern which only covers the edges of the scarf, draws a reference to habitat loss, which is the most serious in the plummeting insect population.
The ‘Mammalia’ print sheds light on the catastrophic impacts of war and civil unrest on the endangered flora and fauna illustrated in this print. The camouflage pattern on the background draws a subtle parallel to the issue.
