Can the stimuli of touch act as a point of communication to facilitate deeper, empathetic connections between us and the declining alpine wildflowers of the UK?

The sense of touch is one of the central forms of perceptual experience, allowing us to communicate with nature and with one another, and to gain a deeper understanding about our internal and external environments. Just like humans, plants react, communicate and sense the world through tactile interactions at their own pace, which happens to be slower than ours.

Focusing on Wildflower conservation and researching plant behaviour and communication, Carolina aims to facilitate empathy between humans and plants in this moment of rapid climate change. Implementing robotics to embroidered structures opens up new ways of visualizing communication with wildflowers through the stimuli of touch. Through smart textiles, I am constructing an imagined world where our response time is coordinated with that of wildflowers’. New, shared experiences can be created as digital textile technologies are programmed to react to tactile interaction.
